Sean Kay – Cosmic Disco Mixes

This week’s ‘Dropbox’ mix(es) comes courtesy of Harlow’s Sean Kay.

After a few rounds of email tennis we trawled through some informative background info on the guy responsible for creating not one but two cracking mixes for your listening pleasure this week.

In his own words…

I have been a serious record collector for 20+ years (I’m 39 now) and in those early days I DJ’d locally in the pubs, bars, small raves & all night house parties around the Harlow area in Essex.

Starting in late 1988 through to the early 90′s playing quite eclectic sets based on what I was hearing in London clubs/raves of the time and adding my own selections to the mix, ranging from house, disco, balearic and hip-hop from the likes of The Clash, The Cure and anything else you could dance to.

In the mid nineties I discovered where my real passion lay musically through Aidy West at Vinyl Underground, opening my ears to Ron Trent/Chez Damier (Prescription Records), Carl Craig (Planet E), Moodymann (KDJ), UR/Red Planet, Maurizio/Basic Channel, Octave one (430 West), Cajual/Relief Records and latterly Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir (Frictional Records) most of which I still play today and clearly these producers had a big influence on a lot of dance music today, some of which are still setting the standards with their own particular styles.

After brief flirtations with drum & bass, Mo Wax & broken beats then not really buying any vinyl at all for the best part of 4 years, even selling off large chunks of my collection I have once again started to buy more vinyl than ever after re-discovering that ‘passion’.

I’m still liking the deeper US Sounds of people like Jus ED, Brothers Vibe, Keith Worthy, Patrice Scott and those previously mentioned and have discovered the new post-MNML European house producers such as Sascha Dive, Johnny D & Guillaume & Coutu Dumonts who are featured in both of my exclusive mixes.

I occasionally play at old friend Dave Rose & Jeff Ginsburgh’s ‘Future Nature’ parties in London, finally getting a chance to play exactly what I want with no reservations or restrictions in addition to more locally at good mates Dave Sims & Dave Davies events, playing a more eclectic selection.

Well, one thing we can’t accuse Sean of is being lazy!.

Enjoy…
