Tirk, the label that has delighted us with superb compilations such as the renowned ‘Credit to the Edit’ series and the recently released and highly essential (for those who did not get the vinyls at the time) ‘Zen and the Art of Disco’, is back with us.

A record label branching from the now defunct and equally successful mid 90s label Nuphonic, that proves to get better with each release.

Tirk’s latest release by The Love Supreme, an Italian ensemble properly abusing some old analog synths and seemingly stuck in some 1980’s art house with a strong Krautrockesque influence, deliver a compilation of listenable tracks and some jewels (‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ – a rendition of Bauhaus same titled mind-trip hit or ‘Rocquet’ – already released as a 12″ single couple of years ago are getting serious rotation)

‘New Millenium Freaks’ sounds solid, organic (there are some ‘real’ instruments being used here… Listen to ‘Sugar’). Yet, sometimes too ‘clean’ and perfected… an Italian trend that sometimes deliver great results. It is overall an album that goes down well at home and with a bar / lounge crowd. No party belters though.

Tirk adds up another reference to its catalogue and we strongly recommend you to give it a proper listening and why not… some monetary transaction called purchase that will carry on supporting this consistent and humble UK label.

And if in doubt, just remember who brought you the timeless killer ‘Voodoo Ray’ touched by the magic hand of maestro Greg Wilson or the still present in my record bag Chaz Jankel’s compilation ‘My Occupation’.

Having been diminished in my discoveries by none other than Michael Barrymore I have decided to go one step further with my own Japanese adventure.

The last blog scratched the surface and I would like to delve a little deeper into the music and culture…

After realising a few years earlier that I had run up thousands of pounds in credit card bills after recklessly buying promos of Stiff releases, notably Ian Dury, I decided to tone it down a little.
Tokyo is a place where I think you need to have an idea of what you are after before you go off on the hunt, otherwise it could lead to bankrupcy or worse.

My sources of inspiration can stem from many things and is genuinely down to the mood I am in.
In this instance I had just finished reading Gary Kemp’s “I know this much is true,” dont ask.

Oddly, it kind of made me angry. Still not sure I know why.

I think in retrospect it was the ying and yang of those times and that made realise how we all got sucked into the graniose bullshit that is the 80’s.
Anyway, I told my Japanese friends about the book and in return they took me to an 80’s video bar. We sat, drank, and watch Sigue Sigue Sputnick, Spandau Ballet and BAD video’s. It felt a little weird if i am honest.

As a response to this, I felt I needed to dig deep into my underground spirit and discover music that was the total antithesis. Anti pop if you were.

My friend took me into Record Disc and I began to look around. The shop PA was playing the most beserk music i had heard for quite sometime. So berserk that i needed to ask.

They pointed me to CD on the wall.

This was my discovery of the wonderful Yin and Yang ‘Tomita’.
The album in question, ‘Music for Living Sound’ – subtitled, ‘Cool Sounds from Real Life’.
This always leads to a feeling. One that seems ever eternal in the life of an addict. A little piece of the puzzle of my life completed.
And this in turn led to questions. Who is this wild looking man that seems to have existed for an eternity? And, more importantly, why hadn’t I been informed earlier?

So before all you disco and dance fiends get excited, let me go into a little more detail.
Ultimately I don’t know that much about the man apart from the fact that he is a scientist of some sorts, lets say, a musical one.
Here are some track titles, I guess it will give you more of a handle on the music.

Laughter Robot in Silicon Valley

Flash to the Bionic Beat

My Brain My Muscle and My Heart for Bionic Music

And so the list goes on.

Now if I were one of those producers that shopped for music purely for the necessity of samples, then I would have struck gold. But thats not my gig.

What I discovered can only be described as the Japanese equal to Eno. And as I sit here writing this and listening, my children sit and stare at me, as if to say, Dad, “What are you going through?” Deep down they know, as I have a smile on my face.

I get so much joy out of discovering the undiscovered, and especially love the sound of a hi-pitched transistor screaming at me with a child’s voice repeating the words “talk to me,” over and over, like some kind of mantra.

“A challenging and exciting music policy .” Time Out

“We like the cut of World Unknown’s jib, especially when it comes to musical policy” FACT

Dr. Alex Paterson exclusive World Unknown-style set (The Orb/HFB)

Andy Blake exclusive live acid house set (Dissident, Black Editions)

Joe Hart DJ set (Bloc, Body Hammer)

Visuals from Mike Coles (Malicious Damage)

Acid house, new beat, EBM, cold wave, minimal wave, synth pop, proper electro and more…

Due to the phenomenal response to Andy’s free World Unknown download, here’s a new equally stunning free mix from Joe Hart. Ignore at your peril.

February 12th / 11pm – 5am / Secret location, Brixton, London / £5 before 12 and £7 after . Visit World Unknown for address or email mail@worldunknown.co.uk for address plus £5.00 guest list all night.

World Unknown are very excited to welcome electronic pioneer, the good Dr. Alex Paterson. A punk and acid house veteran, Alex is the man responsible for bringing ambient music to Top Of The Pops, contributing to utter classic ‘Naked In The Rain’ by Blue Pearl and not forgetting, being a top class a fryer of noggins worldwide, with brilliant Orb records and outer-space live sets. Alex has kindly agreed to perform a one-off, World Unknown-style set. Expect dark 1980’s body music with an Orbient twist.

Plus, Andy Blake will be tweaking the boxes with an exclusive, pure-analogue-old-school-acid house-live-set, and Joe Hart (Body Hammer, Bloc) will deliver his usual flawless, connoisseurs’selection DJ set.

If all that wasn’t enough, Alex is bringing with him Mike Coles, the designer and visual expert who also runs the longstanding, cult-classic record label Malicious Damage, home to The Orb, Killing Joke, Shriekback, HFB and many more. Mike will be transforming the already unique venue into a cerebral cocoon, with images befitting and complimenting the soundtrack.

Andy Blake AKA “the best thing since free cocaine” Vice is the driving force the much-loved, recently deceased record labelDissident London, described in his own words as “freestyle analogue electronic dance music”. On the end of the label, he states:

“After 60-something records, 3 CD comps and absolutely no downloads, the time has come to put Dissident to rest. Bearing in mind that I started the label with virtually no plans or expectations, it’s come a very long way in just over 2 years. A fairly hefty proportion of the artists involved have developed good reputations and have a got off to a good start in the game. The Dissident legacy is a bunch of great and varied records and a black and white triangle, and that seems as good a place as any to leave things. Live fast, die young, leave a good looking corpse and all that jazz. I’d love to be able to say that I was taking a nice long time off from running a label to concentrate on other projects but my head is already buzzing with ideas about what to do next so expect a new label very early next year”

Dissident releases include Andy’s own pure analogue, acid house remix of Alexander Robotnick’s ‘Obsession’, The Horrors’synth-laden remix of ‘Akin To Dancing’ by Heartbreak, ’Spessivtseva’ by Naum Gabo (aka JG Wilkes from Optimo) and the leftfield dance anthem ‘False Energy’ by Binary Chaffinch, alongside the debut releases by Gatto Fritto, Cage and Aviary, Brassica, The Niallist and a host of other soon to be household names.

Andy also records as one half of Invincible Scum, Control Voltage and S.C.S. and has just released his debut solo single,Terror International, a pounding 18 minute industrial monster of a track that fits perfectly into the World Unknown soundtrack.

Joe Hart has an obsession with 80’s dance music. He is heavily influenced by radio shows WBMX and HOTMIX 5, plus other pioneering DJs of the era. Joe was a resident at the Brighton based Bloc nights which led to a residency at the now legendary Bloc weekender. He also runs London club night Body Hammer, a good old fashioned Chicago jack party. Joe’s involvement in World Unknown gives him the chance to play records with a darker industrial sound, reminiscent of tracks played in the European clubs that house didn’t quite reach.

World Unknown is a monthly session presenting dance music in its most physical, emotional and cerebral form. Most importantly, no record ever played will be devoid of ideas and imagination. The often boring, characterless, drug-fodder nature of so much club music will not be present. Plus 12″ versions of actual songs feature heavily.

The soundtrack takes in elements of Belgian new beat, jacking acid house, cold wave, synth-pop, techno and italo, and hangs out somewhere in the territory inhabited by Ron Hardy’s wild, kinetic take on house in its prototype form at Chicago’s legendary Muzic Box circa ‘83-’86 and the sound of Belgian clubs Boccaccio, Carrere and Ancienne Belgique in the mid to late 80’s. Naturally Andy and Joe bring things bang up to date with their own unique take on things, digging deep into their expansive, labour-of-love record collections for those gems that nobody else is playing…yet.

The intimate, unique and somewhat strange secret venue in Brixton is perfect for this dance experiment. Away from the trend-hungry hipster hordes of Dalston and Shoreditch, World Unknown is indeed just that.

World Unknown is extremely easy to reach by public transport 24 hours a day.

Brixton tube is a 5 minute walk and the 35 bus runs all the way from Shoreditch to right outside the venue. Many other buses from all over London stop nearby.

Naive Melody have been hosting some of Manchester’s most memorable events over the last few years with legendary parties, bringing the likes of Matthew and Jolyon, Daniel Wang, Andy Blake, Aeroplane and more recently the outstanding Andrew Wetherall and Ivan Smagge to their seedy, late night triad, karaoke hangout – Charlies.

26th February sees no other than Italian ‘Cosmic Club’ legend Daniele Baldelli pay a visit to Naive Melody for what is a very, very rare Manchester appearance. (Like Mr.T, Baldelli doesn’t travel by plane…)

Baldelli has been DJ’ing since 1969 and has unrivalled technical ability, coupled with impeccable programming skills to produce a rare ability that firmly locks his audience to the dance floor with a spell-binding mix of styles ranging from reggae to rock, disco to new wave, electronica to kraut naming only but a few of the genres you can expect to hear over the duration of one his sets.

A regular Naive Melody party is one not to be missed but this one really is going to be something special as the intimate nature of the venue is set to make for a charged atmosphere, creating the perfect environment for this unique DJ. After having the pleasure of hosting Baldelli for the 2009 Futuresonic Festival we can personally vouch that Daniele is quite possibly the best live DJ we have ever witnessed. He seriously lives up to the hype he is that special. Non stop dancing guaranteed.

We strongly advise grabbing your tickets in advance which can be purchased for £8 from Piccadilly Records, Eastern Bloc or check out the Naive Melody Facebook page for all the latest info.

To get you in the mood check out a couple of Daniele Baldelli mixes:

Last year we were contacted by the guys at International Feel, a new record label based out of Uraguay, informing us of their project and manifesto which very much appealed to the sensibilities of vinyl collectors/music lovers such as ourselves with the focus on quality not quantity.

The finest underground artists coupled with a strong belief in the overall ‘Physical’ product was literally music to our ears as a focus was to be applied to the cover art, quality pressed vinyl and limited edition production aimed at the collector. This was backed up with a beautiful piano infused slo-mo house debut release as Rocha’s ‘Hands of Love’ was one of our favourite 12 inch releases of 2009. Not only was the original mix a stunner but remixes were featured from the likes of Mugwump, Reverso 68, Gatto Fritto and the legendary DJ Harvey.

22nd February 2010 sees International Feel Cat. No.IF003 released with no other than Harvey presenting his latest original body of work via the ‘Locussolus’ moniker. A project utilising the talents of a number of west coast US of A musicians the results are impressive indeed. Featuring two tracks ‘Gunship’ and ‘Little Boots’ the opener is an acid laced trip to the darkest recesses of space. As if trying to make contact with alien life forms ‘Gunship’ holds your head underwater, pulling you up for air just before losing consciousness. This is future house music at it’s finest.

‘Little Boots’ is a smackier affair to say the least, chugging along at just over 70bpm this is the ying to ‘Gunships’ yang. Driving guitar riffs coupled with disorientating effects are pulled back into line with a hypnotic synth-bass line. With a wah-wah solo Jimmy Page would be proud of this track would quite happily have lasted 15mins+ and it still would have kept my attention throughout.

With the possibility of a Locussolus long player in the pipeline Harvey only reinforces his legend with this stunning release. It’s no doubt going to be on a limited pressing on vinyl but for these who are foolish enough to pass up the black crack, you will have the opportunity to get yourselves a digital copy of the tracks via Juno download once the vinyl has been available for a while.

For those who want to check out both tracks, head over the ever brilliant Beats In Space where Tim Sweeney recently had the man himself in the studio where it sounds like they had a great laugh whilst digging through Harvey’s selections.

Seriously recommended, don’t let this pass under your radar…
