Beppe Loda Typhoon & Cosmic mix tape BL1 1984
Categories: Music
In the summer of 2008 along with two friends I started a night in Manchester called Cutloose. The first party was in September with Theo Parrish guesting all night long. For our October party we wanted to change direction musically and bring back Beppe Loda and Loud E.
Beppe had played in Manchester previously when Cosmic Disco staged at night at Sankeys in the upper part of the club formerly known as the Soap Bar. Fast forward a couple of years and the Soap Bar was demolished and turned into a second club called Spektrum. I’d spent nearly 7 years as a resident at the club playing downstairs and upstairs in the club so it felt strange at first to not only be returning with our own night but to bring back a guest who had also previously played too. We didn’t record the night though Loud E and Beppe delivered musically and it was a fantastic start to the Cutloose season.
Beppe [ the honorary handsome Mancunian ] stayed with me at my apartment that weekend and we had a great weekend taking in some record shopping, cliche coffee meets with other Italian friends and educating Loud E in hang over cures such as Gregg’s steak bakes. He really wasn’t cool with this and opted for a more healthier option. Elisa one of my Italian friends had just returned from Volterra after visiting family and on her return had furnished me with parmigiano reggiano, salsiccia toscana, olio extra vergine di oliva and salamino piccante plus pecorino toscano non stagionato and ‘cantuccini’ and ‘brutti ma buoni’ biscuits.
During Beppe’s stay he showed me some music that he’d composed on the flight over to the UK. It was for some new MC1 material that I’m not sure has ever been released. That said I can’t read music very well. Over bread, sausage, cheese and biscuits we talked about Typhoon and his time there plus his stint at Cosmic too. Regular readers will know that Beppe has a very different outlook about the whole ‘Cosmic’ scene.
I made some notes about the chat which which I’ll eventually get around to talking about on the Cosmic Disco. In addition to that Beppe had brought along recordings that showcased his sound during the transition between Typhoon and Cosmic in 1984. He described it as a mix of pop, new wave, electronic and industrial. Beppe went on to tell me that it’s one of his favourite tapes “despite the music being a bit too hard for that time.”
Here’s one of Beppe’s favourite tapes which I hope you like as much as he does. It’s a keeper for sure!
