Cosmic Disco Recommends…

Posted on 26. Jul, 2009 by baggy in Reviews & Previews

As we are a few days late publishing our weekly ‘Recommended’ section this week, let’s get straight into the highlights of what we think demands your immediate attention:

Wah-Chu-Ku – T Times Too EP [Drumpoet] Released: 21st August 2009.

Tony Nwachuckwu is somewhat of a musical pioneer… The mastermind behind Attica Blues, remixer for people such as Unkle, Macy Gray and even Duran Duran goes somewhat to show just how respected this guy is. His first EP for Drumpoet is championing his love of Techno(logy) and underlines his musical knowledge and open-mindedness with the Detroit sounding ‘T Times Too’, the broken sounds of ‘Flowin’ and the twisted ‘Outta’ere’. A highly recommended release worth your attention in the coming month.

Erkrankdung Durch Musique UPDATE

The second in the series of Love In C-Minor releases by house band POLLYester is due to drop very soon and the guys have decided to shift the label and join ranks with friends Permanent Vacation where all of their future relases will be put out via P-V. Love In C-Minor is a ‘Countdown’ label where only 10 releases are planned before the label self-destructs! This latest release from Cosmic Disco favourites POLLYester is entitled ‘Round Clocks’ and you can pre listen to the track here. Also, Le Dompteur Mooner has not only been busy fathering his first child (Hello bambino Juno!) but has created a new project called Super Tahoe which is a series of edits from a number of super rare and obscure, yet dancefloor compatible tracks. The first release is scheduled in around 2-3 weeks and is called ‘Music For Espionage’. The package includes a 4 colour KGB sleeve and the vinyl is transparant with blue ink splashes in a nice silky black sleeve! Listen to the tracks here.

FRKWYS 12″ Series + Kickstarter [Rvng] Released: 15th August 2009.

RVNG announces it’s first original release – The Excepter edition of the new FRKWYS (A play on the 1940’s world music label – Folkways) 12″ Series. FRKWYS pairs contemporary artists and their projenitors by way of remix, reinterpretation and original collaboration with each release living under a thematic banner, exploring a different facet of electronic music. This first release features collaborations from NYC’s industrustrial pranksters Excepter with Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti, JG Thirwell and Jack Dangers sets the bar pretty high. These limited edition 12″s (900 pressing) are to be housed in a seemingly simple but financially devastating package using classic tip-on style jackets wrapped in black leatherette, overlayed with FRKWYS ‘Family Portraits’ which will create a substantial and archival feel. This series will be championed through Kickstarter – A fund raising platform for the arts. If you can’t afford the slightly higher 12″ retail price ($18), you can offer a minimum pledge of $1. Pledge $5 and you’ll get 320kbps MP3’s of the 12″ plus a pin and sticker. Whatever you contribute ensures the record will be released certainly and gloriously. The guys are also offering a ‘One-Shot’ only of 100 subscriptions to the full series through Kickstarter. This subscriptions entitles you to the entier 10-part series and many bonusues at a greatly reduced price. Once these subscriptions are sold this won’t be offered again. There’s only a couple of weeks left for the label to reach it’s goal so check out the project landing page here.

Mushrooms Project – Space Mushrooms [Electric Minds] Released: July 2009.

Mushrooms Project are Giorgio Giri and Marco Lentano who met back in 2003, joined through a love of DJ’ing and a passion for all forms of music. With inspiration coming from the likes of The Idjut Boys and Mateo and Matos lead them to push boundaries as they became familiar with using up to four turntables enabling them to fuse together deep house, disco and funk. After making their debut in their home country of Italy they have gone on to play various parties around Formentera and Ibiza. In the middle of the Mediterranean their Balearic approach fitted perfectly with their surroundings. With their debut release signed to London’s Bear Funk this was shortly followed by Electric Minds picking up on the guys talents to release the ‘Space Mushrooms’ EP where tracks ‘Eilkommen’ and ‘Special Guest In The Camping’ use live instruments throughout, providing a new sound for the ever growing house/disco scene. This package sees a specially commissioned remix from Toby Tobias which showcases his now trademark sound. Head over to Electric Minds for more info.

The Crepes – What Else? [Inf000] Released: 27th July 2009.

The Crepes is a collaboration between Dan Lissvik (Studio) and Fredrik Lindson (The Embassy). As Studio and The Embassy are a couple of our favourite Swedish bands coming across details of this latest project pricked our ears somewhat. With a pop sensibility ‘What Else?’ certainly takes Dan Lissvik into new territory from his two previous ‘Balearock’ albums (Studio’s ‘West Coast’ and solo project ‘7Trx + Intermission’) with Fredrik picking up vocal duties, this new project  is the perfect summer soundtrack. If Erland Oye (Kings of Convenience), Rubies and other such blissful electronic pop is up your street then this long player of grown up pop will be an instant favourite. You’ll have to be quick though as pressings have been limited to 300 vinyl copies so head over to INF000 and pick one up ASAP! As a taster we managed to get our hands on a 5:50 soundclip of snippets from the album (See bottom of post). Here is a heads up on the album tracklisting:

  • What Else?
  • Love You All The Same
  • Write
  • Ebb Tide
  • Cassette
  • No
  • Sugar
  • Candidate

There is plenty of new music and info scheduled to drop at Cosmic Disco over the coming weeks. The new album from Cosmic favourite ‘The Sorcerer’ entitled ‘Neon Leon’ is released on 3rd August on Tirk Records and to celebrate we are in the middle of a brand new interview (And hopefully mix) with Dan Judd himself. We have an exclusive mix from the guys over at Horse Meat Disco (Published on 3rd August) to celebrate their first compilation on Strut. A simply stunning mix and interview with Tigersushi Bass System’s Alexis Le-Tan and more of the same from ThisIsNotAnExit’s Parrallels and DC Recordings new boys The Kreeps and Antoni Miaovvi to name only a few. Our forever promised download and merchandise store is still in the pipeline (Once we iron out a few bugs!) and you can of course hit us up for our twice weekly guest mixes. If you are Manchester based keep an eye out for some upcoming live dates and Cosmic Disco parties coming later in the year.
