MUSIC RELEASES

Brown – A Little Bit Futher We Go On [Unpopular Music] Released: 17th August.

Following on from the success of their first release from Unpopular Music, Nottingham based band Brown are back on their own label for ‘A Little Bit Futher We Go On’. The original (And our favourite) version is an indie/outsider pop crossover with The Magic Fly bringing a dub reggae flavours to his mix with deep house on offer from veterans Inland Knights.

Brown are fronted by singer, songwriter and producer Ben McCourt and have appeared on various indie labels over the past few years. With a back catalogue of over 60 tracks to their names and a budding career on the live circuit, Brown recently set up Unpopular Music to focus more on developing the band following some well received live shows around the UK.

Unpopular Music have grown out of the embers of the free party scene, inspired by legendary soundsystems like DIY and Smokescreen are are now setting new fires with a string of releases lined up from artists based on both sides of the Atlantic covering House and more eclectic projects. Find out more details at Unpopular Music.

Black Rio 2 – Original Samba Soul 1968-1981 [Strut] Released: Available Now.

Back in 2002 Strut released ‘Black Rio’, compiled by London DJ Cliffy which offered a snapshot of the 1970’s black Rio soul and funk movement in Brazil. Now, Strut release the second volume in the series, delving even deeper to sample some of the lesser known gems emerging from the carnival capital during that era.

For a taste of the samba flavour, check out this half hour mix featuring tracks from the compilation then head over to the Black Rio micro site where you can download the track ‘Our Sound’ by Guimaraes E O Grupo Som Sagrado. Here’s the tracklist for the compilation:

Desire – II [Italians Do It Better] Released: Available Now.

It’s no secret that we are huge fans of New Jersey based label Italians Do It Better and this latest long player only reinforces that fact as IDIB supergroup Desire, comprising of main man Johnny Jewel (Glass Candy), drummer Natty (Chromatics) and Montreal vocalist Megan-Louise features eight tracks of Cosmic Disco, Post Punk and New Wave influenced sounds that continue the high quality output of this brilliant label. Picking up where the Chromatics and Glass Candy sound left off Johnny’s love of sharp analog synths and sultry vocalists plain to see on the most accessible and dancefloor friendly ‘Mirroir Mirroir’. As written in numerous other IDIB reviews this really is music suited for bleak city landscapes after dark. Moody and melancholic, ‘II’ is a perfect piece of disco noir worth your attention.

Subway – Subway II [Soul Jazz Records] Released: Available Now.

Clearly influenced not only by 1970’s Krautrock but 80’s Detriot Techno and Italo Disco, Subway are Michael Kirman and Alan James. Subway II was recorded at their home, East London studio using numerous peices of analog equipment enabling them to recreate the soundscapes of Berlin, Detroit, Paris and a contemporary London.

The album is a cosmic progression of post-dance music, focusing on meditative thought rather than keeping an eye on the dancefloor whilst maintaining a constant beat and rhythm.

Subway’s most recent appearance was on Soul Jazz Singles 2008-9, alongside fellow electronic pioneers Kode9, Digital Mystikz and Ramadanman.

Subway II has been getting serious airtime over the last few weeks and sits right in with the current penchant for all things cosmic, organic and hypnotic.

Various Artists – Hibernation Vol.1 [Bear Funk] Released: Available Now.

Hibernation Vol.1 is the first in a new series of compilations on one of the world’s most talked about independent record labels – Bear Funk. These unmixed CD’s feature a few of the greatest hits of the previous months, some future smashes and exclusives unavailable anywhere else. The release sees thirteen tracks from the likes of Social Disco Club and Maia, King DJ, Sleazy McQueen, The Diaphanoids and Kotey Extra Band serving up some stunning leftfield Electronica, Psyched-out Disco and downtempo rollers that comes complete with a rather natty, limited fur patch on the cover. Grrr!
