Space Race 10 – The Final Frontier…
Posted on 05. Jan, 2009 by baggy in Mixes we made
It’s been a little over two years since Baggy produced the first in his series of ‘Space Race’ mixes exclusively for Cosmic Disco and after nine editions he has finally decided that now is the right time close the book on the series by completing a final chapter where he has included a number of his favourite tracks taken from all previous editions to create one final Space Race mix: Space Race 10 – The Final Frontier.
The initial aim of the Space race series was to marry old tracks, both favourites and recent finds he’d excavated from dusty vaults with newer releases that complimented not only his musical style but those which also clearly reflected just what influence the past has on present releases.
Baggy: “I’m potentially setting myself up for some stick here as I’ve not included tracks such as Karen Young’s ‘Detour’ which became synonymous with the Space Race series but as I wanted to try and stick to a predetermined mood and what with the sheer amount of tracks available, they weren’t all going to work when trying to get a fair representative from each of the nine editions. For those who are familiar with the series you will hopefully notice that a familiar flow/vibe remains consistent throughout. I like to start off horizontally, picking things up a little as we reach mid set (Never too much mind!) and eventually return the listener to a comfortable location where they touch down reassuringly in a relaxed state not too dissimilar from where we started. One thing I personally noticed whilst working on this series was my focus and priority towards mixing the records. At the start I wanted the transitions to be beat-matched (Even though I’m not the most technically gifted DJ. As you can clearly hear on some of the blends!) but as I reached the middle of series you will notice the focus shifts from beat-matching to simple blends/fades as the mood of the tracks becomes more prominent than the ‘mixing’. As the series ends I once again return to a more beat-matched direction taking inspiration from earlier efforts, hopefully resulting in a more complete compilation by Space Race 9. My most positive feedback from others was to Space Race 1 (Should’ve stopped at that one!), whereas editions 6, 8 & 9 are my personal favourites. Just in case you are wondering all of these mixes were recorded live using x2 turntables, a mixer and vinyl. I still don’t know how to use CDJ’s!”
Here’s the track list for Space Race 10, The Final Frontier and should you wish to re-visit any of the previous mixes in the series you can find them by clicking here.

dunno mate, no immediate plans unless we get booked.
next cosmic party isnt going to be until easter at the earliest – credit ker-runtch.
mark (thp/bucky) is kicking off the new start for cutloose at the roadhouse from feb where you can no doubt hear him (and some tasty guests) spin some stuff but in terms of a ‘cosmic’ club set there’s nothing in the pipeline for the next couple of months at least…
as you missed us at the bookbinders party recently we’ll be making the residents dj sets available via the site very soon. we played some nice 80’s boogie and dubbed out post disco/proto house during the warm up and myself and niles have a tag-team mix packed full of this type of stuff going online soon…
