Cosmic Jane – Children of Criminals

Posted on 12. Dec, 2008 by baggy in Mixes we didn't make

Experienced crate digger and edit-meister extrordinare Craig Smith aka Cosmic Jane kindly provides an excellent selection of Cosmic/Balearica to sooth you into the weekend.

Residing on the moors high above Hebden Bridge he’s doing all he can to convince the locals there is more to music than tech house and reggae.  A man to our own hearts, Craig is an expert at unearthing tracks from little known shops in backwater hamlets and villages where mere mortals would’nt dare venture.

Recently having his first release on Mudd’s impressive Sixty Five imprint with two edits (Siouxsie Sioux being an excellent rework of Sapho – Carmel) we’ve been lucky enough to hear a couple of his latest works and very much look forward to hearing updates on any vinyl releases.

For those in the Manchester region you can catch up with CJ where he has been asked to play records at Bar Common in addition to Night Music in Chorlton (Organised by Balearic Mike) so when we know the dates, we’ll update accordingly.

There is no track listing currently available so those with any spotting questions, leave your comments below where Craig will no doubt give you a helping hand if required. If you know any of the tracks, let us know!

ah Hebden Bridge, one of my favourites places while staying 9 months in West Yorkshire and trying to make the most of a metrocard from Wakefield station…Sure a tracklist would be nice but if can’t be bothered Hebden Bridge’s memories will suffice

    Hi Vanessa,

Hebden! i I only moved there recently and have just really started to scratch the surface, but it’s certainly an interesting place. When were you last there?

    Best,

    Craig

Gosh it was way back in 1999, what with the mill and the canal I remember feeling like I had stepped back into 19th century, unique atmosphere…did you move from another Yorkshire place or a totally different area?
    keep on digging!

I moved from Chorlton, Manchester. It’s a bit of a cliché to move from Chorlton to Hebden Bridge ! Still I like it up on the Moors, although the weather is heroic.

    Merry Christmas

Great mix! …. amongst others, I heard:

    • Planet Caravan by Sabbath

    • Can’t Sit Down off that 65 twelve incher (would love to know the original of this by the way )

    • Lullaby For Robert by Al Usher

Nice track after “Can’t Sit Down” as well …. sounds like Tangerine Dream but have no idea what it is.

I’m just up the road from Hebden Bridge myself. I’ve bagged some some great 70’s nuggets from the charity shops down there over the years thanks to the large population of old hippies that hit the village in the late 1960’s. Not had much recently but that’s probably because you’re getting there before me ;)

    Magic Torch:

Can’t Sit Down off that 65 twelve incher (would love to know the original of this by the way

Aphrodites Child ‘All the seats were taken’ from the 666 lp.

A bit of cutting and pasting involved, but not much except for ditching the mad bad trip bits!

Magic Torch, so where you at?

Cheers Baggy…I got another here if you have a dry period and want some filler.

    Cosmic Jane,

Cheers for the tip on the Aphrodities Child. I’ve got “The Four Horsemen” track by them on some comp. Seen 666 about a few times over the years but it’s always been a bit steep to take a punt on. Will deffo check it out further now. I seem to remember Bandana Ferret tipping me on it over on the DJH forum, years back. I should have paid more attention.

I’m just up the road in Halifax, but grew up in Luddenden Foot which is about 3 miles out of Hebden Bridge, and I spent a lot of my youth dossing about in Hebden. Still occasionally like a stroll on the tops around there. Great part of the world! Used to be a great shop down there called System Records but its strictly online now sadly. One of the lads who worked there now works for Wall Of Sound in Huddersfield, if you are ever over there, check it out…. great ’secondhand and a few new’ vinyl shop.

Thanks for the mix anyway, got some great stuff on it. And thanks Baggy for hosting.

yep, i used to visit wall of sound in Halifax when it was in the piece hall but it was too cramped in there to even get the records out of the shelving and only had one of those belt drive decks you had to change when changing the rpm, very awkward but no doubt they had some awesome records. it was bloody freezing in there as well!

now they have moved to the shop in huddersfield it’s a great record shopping experience. all very organised, roomy in the basement (where the vinyl is) with a couple of tt’s for listening posts. i took niles there last year and he loved it also…

elliot who runs it is a nice chap as well, always welcomes us and sure knows his prog.

myself and niles will be driving out there soon so will no doubt make sure we add a review to the ‘diggers guide’ section of the site.

picked up some stunning experimental/industrial LP’s last trip out there.
