Makin Music - July 2008

July sees this very site featured as part of an article in no other than the Guardian Guide music section, highlighting the recent interest in the Cosmic/Balearic scenes.
Just in time for this months podcast of ‘Makin Music’…
We hear the influence that Bill Laswell has here at Cosmic Disco with tracks from the likes of Material, Manu Dibango and Herbie Hancock. Niles plays records at the wrong speed (Unintentionally) and a track inspired from a bus trip whilst holidaying recently in Fueraventura. Baggy reveals he spent most of his time preparing the show agenda by reading celebrity gossip websites in order to find Lindsay Lohan related articles in order to keep Niles awake during the news section.
Some fantastic club nights are featured in the events section with no other than Danielle Baldelli playing at Manchester’s Aficionado 10th Birthday celebrations. Being the uber-organised geek that he is, Baggy decided to book his holiday that week and will be away for what is set to be the party of the summer. Whopper alert!
Enjoy this month’s podcast and don’t forget to hit up the RSS feed, now located at the top of the site.

Really enjoyed this fellas, not much to listen to on the radio here in Shanghai so it was a real breath of fresh air.

W/r/t the poppadom track:
It’s incredibly racist… play it to your indian brothers and see if they see the irony.
Tread carefully.

regarding i can do anything you like by the monks, continuing the is it/isn’t it racist debate, i can conclusively state that it isn’t considered racist by at least a portion of today’s bengali/pakistani yoot, just highly amusing.
allow me to explain. i am a primary school teacher here in bradford and this kind of clumsy, heavily accented english is ridiculed within these communities. kids of all colour walk around and talk to their mates in this way when they’re just having a crack and want to impersonate someone stupid or ill-informed. they often associate this sort of clumsy indo-englishness with shopkeepers and trying to sell or haggle over anything. why they do this i honestly have no idea but the behaviour is pervasive throughout the three highest year groups. a slang name for the type of person who speaks in this way was mentioned to me once, which in my old age i have completely forgotten.
further proof, if any were needed, can be derived from an incident on a school trip where some kids got a hold of my ipod on the coach and found this song hilarious. it was a very loud bengali kid who noticed the lyrics and soon had the back of the coach singing them.
enjoying the podcast over here in god’s county, where’s the latest? dust yourself down from the big chill lads and get on with it!

Thanks for the input es.
The Monks track is just straight up funky. I’m really after the Dub version but it goes for silly money.
