Beat Electric Guest Mix

Beat Electric Guest Mix

Posted on 20. Jun, 2008 by baggy in Mixes we didn't make

This week’s guest mix comes courtesy of San Fran’s Black Shag & BT Magnum who run one of our favourite Underground Disco & Boogie blogs in Beat Electric.

Specialising in Boogie, Rare Disco, Laser Soul and Proto House the guys have been posting insightful and informative articles on some of the rarer black orientated dance music from the last 30-odd years. Another great feature of this blog is their attention to detail in the equipment they use when recording their selections. Utilising the trusty Technics 1200 MKII with an Origin Live OL1 (Rega RB-250) tonearm with internal rewire and structural upgrade, Eichmann copper bullets, fitted with a Grado DJ 200i cartridge all running through a Clearaudio Micro Basic Phono Stage. Nice.

Their Cosmic Disco ‘Ride My Spaceship’ mix is indicative of the guys DJ sets over latter part of last year in addition to some of the tracks posted on their blog.

Head over to their site and go educate yourselves. Anyone who posts Katie Kissoon’s – You’re The One (You’re My Number One) is O.K in our book. ;-)

In the meantime, kick back and enjoy another excellent guest mix…

Always cool, the mixes from the Beat Electric guys! Very nice tracks. Isn’t Wanda related to Narada Michael Walden? I remember ‘Don’t you want my loving’ from her as well. Great track.

Yes, I believe Wanda Walden is Narada Michael’s sister in law but I am not entirely sure. She had a couple of excellent tracks. “Don’t You Want My Loving” (which was written and produced by Narada) has a sweet Chic-esque backing track. Thanks for the positive feedback everyone, it is very much appreciated!

Thanks for having us, we had a lot of fun putting the mix together, I’m just sorry it took us so long to get around to it. As karmic retribution I sacrificed the fader on my Rane in the process of it’s creation and must now scour ebay for another.

As I said this mix looks great – and I listened to it on the thigh pod this morning coming to work and its absolutely great, not just great. I nearly got out of the car and got down at some traffic lights.
I especially love the westwood style explosions on one of the tracks (dynamite).

Funny you should mention Westwood Stu, I remember him using a loop from the first track on the mix, Starvue, as his main intro a talk over instrumental. With obligatory explosions and reverbed out gangster speak of course.

Subsequently I have based most of my adult life on Westwood’s teachings.
