JohnnyTooBad – Going Downstream Mix
Posted on 22. Feb, 2008 by baggy in Mixes we didn't make
Growing up in the north of Sweden people would expect J2B to be a snowboarder or a punk-rocker.
Having tried both and being the eldest sibling – Jonas aka JohnnyTooBad’s passion for music eventually cast its fat shadow over everything else, including little brother Göran.
This is where the Hermanos started, a dynamic duo of the deep and fairly slow motion house and disco.
Taking Gothenburg by silent storm in 2001, JohnnyTooBad started out with booking people like Mark Seven in back-alley bars, disturbing the peace at the legendary Nefertiti jazz club and producing headphone masterpieces on his old computer. After a couple of years the brothers went their separate ways but from this brotherly love sprouted a wider scene which now includes various club promoters and DJ’s.
Some of the involved are Qlint and Ed Ed of the Caviar Club, edit masters Västkustska Ryggdunkarsällskapet (Who released the brilliant Vansro Boogie back in ‘07), Johnny’s own Puzzle Club which he runs with eclectic hip hop/house DJ JayStarSeven, the everlasting Hermanos escapade and many other hidden talents.
Nowadays, having made himself a name within the ‘Disco-Not-Disco’ scene of serious coach potato home mixes, Johnny’s gone more into producing, letting little brother Sankt Göran ahead with his release for Bear Funk Gold and various domestic labels.
As Sleepless, Johnny meddles with serious Balearic styles, slow house beats and dubby disco. This quirky alias also took him all the way to Melbourne with the Red Bull Music Academy in 2006.
Look out for the forthcoming release – Alpha Man’s “Alistair”, on Gothenburg techno label – Cause & Effect which features an excellent ‘Sleepless Dub’.
More unreleased material is waiting to be CD-R’d during 2008 so keep your ears to the ground!
Cosmic Disco would like to once again thank Jonas for providing what we think is yet another fantastic mix for your aural pleasure. Here’s the T/L. Click the buttons below to d/l, or stream this bad-bwwoooy:

“Sample & Hold” is off Neil Young’s ‘difficult’ Trans album on Geffen is it not…

Yes it is. There’s also a 12″ but I never saw that one, which suggests that’s even more “difficult”..

Haha. Somebody was saying on our message board that Geffen tried to sue him for that album reckoning he was making deliberately poor music.

That’s gotta be a confused “Mirroball” enthusiast, preferrably from Seattle or the north of Sweden…

Really enjoying this. Not a bad selection on the mix. Hearing the Hall and Oates, just makes you realise how fucking good they were. Abandoned Luncheonette is still one of my favourate albums all these years later. It was played constantantly at home by my sister when it was released. I never tire of it, I think its embedded deep in my psyche.
No bad thing.

[...] Goran Dahlstrom: I really don’t recall all the commercial stuff surrounding me when I grew up. I didn’t really pay all that much attention so couldn’t say what other people were listening to. I guess I was more of a classic indie-kid. Loads of Smashing Pumpkins, Suede, The Cure, some of your beloved Morrisey oriented stuff, The Charlatans and so on… We also, and still have, many good Swedish pop bands, some even more famous abroad. The more and more I listened to the electronic stuff that I got from my older brother Jonas (aka JohnnyTooBad) such as The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Kraftwerk and so on the more I got into this type of sound. Cosmicdisco: Ahh, those older siblings have plenty to answer for! So did you pick up any instruments and play in any bands as an angst ridden indie loving youngster? If so, what was your weapon of choice? Also, what is your current studio setup? Editor Note – J2Bad has previously supplied an excellent mix for us, which you can find by clicking here. [...]
