Mike Woods - Freestyle mix

Back in 1986, in the dreary town of Warrington, The Carlton Club showcased artists like Loose Ends, Millie Scott and Kenny Stevens, and enjoyed a strong connection with Earlestown’s Hottwaxx Records. Tracks played on Sundays were made available through Kev Edwards’s pick of the week’s Top 20. For Mike, getting hold of those tracks meant train-hopping from Warrington to Earlestown to pick out imports like Q Pid - My Latin Lover and Nepethe by Skipworth and Turner.

Over the next couple of years, Mark’s collection continued to grow until a seemingly routine night out at the infamous Hacienda in October 1988 changed it all. A chance meeting with Steve Williams, the era’s Warehouse party king, opened up a whole new world of music to him. Eastern Bloc Records became flavour of the month, and the buying continued…

It wasn’t until 1989 that Mike was given the opportunity to start and play his own night, kicking off with Jay Weardon on a Thursday night at the Thunderdome. Trouble at the club - and the reputation that ensued- prompted Mike to look closer to home, the product of which was a Saturday night slot at Legends nightclub in Warrington.

Over the next 3 years, Saturday night at Legends was one of the most popular nights in the North West, evidenced by the crowds that flocked to it from all over the country.

Post-Legends, 1994 saw the birth of brand new night The World. It was akin to Legends, with the bonus that the groundwork had already been put in. Warrington was firmly back on the Saturday Night Out map, and The World enjoyed four years of legendary success.

Mike continued to collect the music he loved. This mix is all about those records and what they’ve represented over the last 20 years. There’s no format, no genres - just good quality record selection.

Mike Woods & Family

Mike now lives in Australia, but thanks to the information super highway and a kind hook up by Jadee, we can still appreciate the music that influenced those immortal nights - and beyond.

Enjoy.

There I was, half a doobie in the ashtray and I’d been surfing the net for about half an hour. I was bored of the forums I frequent ( they were quiet and there was not much action around). ‘I know’ I said to myself, lets have a look at what those ‘wizards of the podcast’ Niles & Baggy have been getting up to over on ‘Crazy Cats’ Cosmic Disco. Its been a while and I’m quite partial to the odd ‘Making Music’ download or two. I enjoy there idiosyncratic gibber in-between introducing me to new good music that I wouldn’t normally listen to.

But enough about the terrible twosome and back to the reason why I’m posting this tanked-up natter late at night. I came here to comment on yet again another flawless gathering of songs from the ‘Man from Down under’ , that will be downloaded, burned to a CD and played in the car quicker than you can say “Throw another shrimp on the barbie mate”.

After 3 cans of Carlsberg and a couple of ’single skinners’, I’m not afraid to admit that at one stage during listening to this mix, I actually got up and went for a waddle around the room (it was during the clash number) before returning to sit back down at my computer.

    Keep them coming Mike…..salud!

    Haha, good post Owl.
More ‘Makin Music’ podcasts coming very soon.
We actually setup ready to record a new episode last week only for Niles central heating to pack in and emergency plumbers being called out instead of recording a show… ah well… :)

Simon, we should be on for a Podcast vibe in the not too distant.
In the meantime, get on this acemax supermix.

Biggest tune for me would have to be On the house - Ride the rhthym…..classic.
