Irlam Social Club mix

Yep Irlam Social Club. I was listening to some old mp3 mix sets and I found some recordings that were taken from nights I had played at before becoming one of the residents at Sankeys. The gigs were local nights supporting friends and events I was promoting myself locally.

I’d been talking about giving up playing out though still collecting records till I helped out with a night called Traffic at the Zanzibar in Liverpool. This was around the start of 2001 with a couple of lads I got talking to through the Judge Jules message board. Straight up. I can’t remember why I joined how ever I did meet local board members in the real world who I’m still friends with today. I guess it doesn’t seem so geeky nowadays with the whole social networking thing; back then it seemed strange to go meet complete strangers in Liverpool on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Don’t forget, people were still using dial up and you could still print out the internet on 10 pages. The night went really well and I got a taste for playing out again and started putting some of my mixes online on my old web site.

I got talking cyber styles with two lads called Spenny and Crofty who were also doing their own thing over in Manchester. They were doing well and had a good following. I can’t remember what their night was called; though I do remember one of them taking place at the Old Monk in the week. Spenny asked me to come over at play at his night at Irlam Social Club. Say again? Social club? I signed up and a few weeks later I made my over to play. There was around four of us playing on the night with me playing towards the end followed by two lads who played back to back. I can’t remember who they were; though they were pretty good and seemed to do their thing well.

The night itself was busy and the sound system was really crisp and clear with a real punch to it. I really did expect to turn up and play on a set of decks at the end of the bar. The venue wasn’t like most social clubs I’d been in either. An hour later and I was done. Musically I probably banged it out a little too much though I enjoyed it and what I was playing got a pretty good reaction. Spenny carried on promoting and DJing and is probably better known nowadays as one of the residents at Sankeys under the guise of Ellesse.

All 60 plus minutes were recorded to my minidisc player which I transferred to mp3 and forgot about till this week. I think I shared mix the on the Tribal Gathering Message board around 2001/2 and sent out a few CDs here and there.
I haven’t got a track listing at the moment; I’ll put one together before the weeks out. Mean time download the mix for some filtered French fun those repetitive Disco loops only Junior Sanchez and co. did so well.
