DJ Mooner Interview

cosmicdisco would like to give a big welcome to DJ Mooner who has kindly agreed to provide a special cosmic mix for our Making Music radio show featuring some of the tracks which will be featured on the fantastic Slow Motion Disco compilation due out soon on Compost Records.

cosmicdisco: Mooner, we came across you via the forthcoming Slow Motion CD on Compost Records and the Cosmic Club fan site on MySpace. Can you tell us how you ended up being asked to compile an album and why you chose to make it Cosmic?

I did a Remix for Compost and Djed for them this year and somehow they were aware of my qualities, so they asked me to compile something for them. I told them that I’m researching Afro / Cosmic stuff for some years and Michael Reinboth was immediately going for it. So I gave them a tracklist and a CD and they said “Here we go!”

cosmicdisco: We know that there is currently a 12″ EP sampler available. When is the full CD scheduled for release?

The CD and 2×12″ will come out mid-October. It will be a Spezial Kover Design!

cosmicdisco: Can you give us a tracklist of what’s confirmed for this compilation already?

I’ll tell you what we didnt get! That was Severed Heads” We Have Come To Bless The House” Die Dominas “Wespendomina” (by M. Goettsching) Tonto’s Expanding Headband – Tontomotion Herb Alpert “Beyond”Isabel antena “Achilles” Cat Stevens “Was dog a doughnut“

cosmicdisco: Who are your musical/DJ influences? Can you list a few of your favourite record labels/producers/artists/clubs?

I was totally influenced by my Mom’s musical taste. I inherited her record collection when I was around 14, 15 yrs old. In that crate was The Cramps, Bollock Brothers, Kraftwerk, Pierre Henry, Stockhausen, MC5, Hendrix, Vangelis, Adam and the Ants, Tangerine dream, … At the time i was totally into Punkrock, so first i picked all the records with guitar riffs!! hahaha

cosmicdisco: What is it about the Cosmic phenomenom you find so appealing?

It is very interesting in many aspects: Socio-culturally, musically, and the fact that it always was locally limited to northern Italy, parts of Austria and the south of Munich. The cosmic sound is different on every tape and they found the weirdest records that fit in their style, and that in 1985!

cosmicdisco: Is it ture that your mother was a Cosmic Club regular and friend of Danielle Baldelli? Did she ever tell you any stories of what the club was like?

My mom never tells me where she went, but when we watch “Monaco Franze” on TV, she always knows all the after hour cafés.

cosmicdisco: Where did you grow up and when did you start DJ’’ing? What are your fondest memories of your early years getting into music?

I grew up in the town that is around the King’s castles of King Ludwig II in the south of bavaria at the border to Austria. It’s very beautiful and romantic there. Then i was sent to a christian private school outside of Munich. Then I moved to Munich when i was 17. I started Djing around 1993 with noises and sounds and some Ambient because i was influenced by those Cosmic tapes that were around in Munich, everyone had those. One of my childhood memories is when I was singing “Fahren Fahren auf der Autobahn” on the Iitalian highways with my mom.

cosmicdisco: Can you tell us a little about some of the club nights/projects you have been involved in and some of the classic records that are associated with these events?

I started organizing illegal parties and happenings with our group GMAM in 1993 in Munich. Since then i organise parties and “happenings” (currently with our group Zombocombo, a wild trash orgy party). I did many parties in Pathos, an old theatre in Munich, and now, sometimes I book Djs for Munich’s club “Die Registratur”. I am about to do a Top 100 MP3 list for those years at Pathos, here, some of the most favored records were the Noodles Discotheque 12’s, A Touch of Class, Alexander Robotnick, Vostok, Hong Kong Counterfeit, you know anything before “Elektroclash”.

cosmicdisco: Do you hold a fetish for vinyl or does format not patriculary bother you?

I am trying not to become a collecting nerd.

cosmicdisco: How many records (approx.) do you have in your personal collection?

Quantity doesn’t count, I listen to a lot and what I like, I get.

cosmicdisco: What is your most treasured record?

It used to be Throbbing Gristle’s 3rd Annual Report and White Noise “Electric Storm in Hell”. Both records I was looking for since i was 17. I am looking for a record by P16D4 called “Kuehe in Halbtrauer”

cosmicdisco: What record shops did/do you shop at and how much of an influence were/are they to you?

There are 2 really really good stores in Munich, Optimal and Play Records. Then there is “the last record shop” in LA, Bleeker Bob’s in NY, and the communal trash store 4 blocks from my house. I guess Optimal was a big influence on me, they always have everything you dream of kinda.

cosmicdisco: You run the Erkrankung record label. What types of artists are on your label?

I always had debut artists and what combines them is a weird form of Pop music. I did the debuts of Queen of Japan, Hong Kong Counterfeit, Steril, The Magnificents, the infamous Commodore C 64 compilation, Mix Mup, Vostok…

cosmicdisco: You’ve had commercial success around Europe with Zombie Nation. Has having a top 10 hit affected your perception of the music industry?

The good thing was that I wasn’t that integrated in the Zombie band (only the first 2 years) and therefore i could escape the monkey biz quite well.

cosmicdisco: What’s your favourite self penned track/production?

Ufffffff!!! I think there is no answer.

cosmicdisco: What’s your current DJ chart?

  1. Dj Mooner - Slow Motion Disco EP - Compost
  2. Ryuichi Sakamoto - Left Handed Dream - Plexus
  3. Per Cussion - Manhattan Jungle - FOG
  4. Rub’n Tug - present Campfire - news
  5. Die Goldenen Zitronen - Wenn ich ein Turnschuh wär - Buback
  6. Solid State - Product of Society- Society

  8. Kaos - Cerebral Tremolo - Rong
  9. Sounds of Our Youth - Wake up+ make Love to Me - bootleg
  10. Deichkind - Remmi Demmi (Scooter RMX) - Universal

cosmicdisco: If you werent involved in music, what would you most likely to be doing?

Form a band and revolutionize the 2000s!

cosmicdisco: What’s your idea of perfect happiness?

To have love, a mission, some money in the pocket and sunshine (it’s raining here since 5 weeks).

cosmicdisco: What living person do you most admire & why?

I really never had Idols, sorry!

cosmicdisco: Whats next for Mooner?

Getting married in Vegas.

cosmicdisco would like to thank Mooner for taking the time to answer our questions and we very much look forward to hearing the full CD release of Slow Motion Disco very soon
